The
sold out audience for Victorian Vices at Wahlert Hall
In
this performance several of the characters from Charles Dickens, Bleak House were highlighted and put
into different settings and situations then they did in the book. The short
play is an attempt to put an ironic twist and a refreshing spin on Dickens
work. The characters portrayed in this performance containing underlying themes
of travel and money were Mr. Woodcourt, played by the talented Timothy Vorwald,
Lady Dedlock by the very sought after McKenzie Frey, Jo portrayed by the rising
star Nathan Fuller, and Hortence from beginning actress Emily Dodd. It is
narrated by the very popular Stephanie Austin-Reed. This performance was
written to be an interactive piece involving the audience and overall it was an
enjoyable experience.
Some of the areas in which this performance
did not fully live up to its expectations were the area in audience
participation. It seemed the directions on what they were supposed to do were
lost as they were not able to keep up to the speed of the speakers. Also the
areas of plot break lacked audience enthusiasm and over participation seemed
lacking. It is uncertain as to whether or not this is due to lack of interest
of lack of scripting. Several areas that were very entertaining were the scenes
involving Jo. The young star brought life to the play and captured the
audience’s attention.

The
other actors and actresses as well captured the audience with their performance
and the development of the plot was intriguing and ironic. Overall, this is a
performance I would recommend as it is sure to get better each time.
