In 1863, Indian railways reached to every port across
India. Railway cars were the cheapest
form of travel for those who sought to go long distances across the country,
and each car was separated by a different caste arrangement. These cars were separated by caste so that
the members of different castes would not mix and have their class distinction
destroyed by lower caste members.
In addition to the separated cars, individuals
purchasing tickets would violently push, shove, and punch people in order to
ensure their seat on the train, thus, police and military men patrolled the
stations. Once inside the cars, many
people would endure extreme temperatures which often reached nearly 120
degrees.
